The Bengali cultural association Prantik was originally founded in 1976 by Jayanta, Padma and their son Obhi Chatterjee to organise a concert by Kanika Banerjee at Conway Hall in central London. Since then, it has organised many innovative Bengali cultural events, mainly in the UK but also internationally. These included the first solo concert by Subinoy Roy in the UK, the first recital of Bengali poetry by the poets themselves and the first Tagore-style Spring Festival (Basanta Utsav) in the UK.
Between 1981 and 2009, it organised regular music classes, given by Jayanta Chatterjee, as well as Bengali classes. Since 1996, Prantik has been celebrating the birth anniversary of Tagore every year in the garden of Shakespeare’s Birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon. This year’s celebrations will take place on 4 May 2025.
Now led by Tagore specialists Obhi and Dr Kaberi Chatterjee, the Prantik team comprises singers, musicians and dancers who either grew up in Rabindranath Tagore’s home town of Santiniketan or have close family ties to Santiniketan. They perform selectively, focusing on suitable opportunities to share their love of Bengali culture, particularly with non-Bengali audiences, such as their performance Dartington 100: The Rabindranath Tagore Connection on 5 May 2025.
